Wheat...West coast white wheat markets saw prices drift a bit lower this
week, following the modest retreat in Chicago futures. However, spot basis
levels did strengthen through the week and cash bids are flat through the
month of January. Both hard red winter and spring wheat bids show a modest
carry posted into deferred months.
Weekly Sales...USDA's updated weekly export sales to mid-November, and
showed a strong 31.2 million bushels in new wheat commitments. This places
year-to-date sales at 666 million bushels, which is 24% ahead of a year ago
and 29% above the five-year average pace. Soft red winter was top seller,
registering 9.4 million bushels. Hard red spring booked 8.2 million bushels
and with 165 million in commitments, sets 5% below a year ago but 6% above
average. Hard red winter garnered 8.1 million bushels to put commitments at
245 million, which is 99% ahead of a year ago and 62% above average. White
wheat added 5.5 million bushels in commitments and with 145 million in sales
sets on-par with a year ago but 20% above average.
Wheat Buyers...Unknown was the top buyer with 12.6 million bushels in new
purchases, followed by Taiwan with 3.8 million, South Korea with 3.3 million,
Mexico at 2.7 million and Japan bought 2.3 million bushels.
